A birthday day!

happy birthday [personal profile] chillies!

and we had a birthday party today!  it seemed to go rather well, and if it's not a silly thing to say. I'm really proud of it.  (if it is silly to say i know that i will be told so forthwith)

we had 30 children.  and no commercial entertainment.  all the entertainment was made by the children and their parents.

we started with letting them draw and colour on white plastic bags.  these were their party bags.

then we split them up into colour coded teams to play games.  this sort of worked, after one activity i believe it was mayhem and they just played what they wanted when they wanted.  still, the object was to run the obstacle course (an amazing one created by Bill & Thomas with some "help" from Nico) and pick up a prize, do the ball toss (3 balls in 3 different buckets, or something close) and pick up a prize, move on to pin the tail on the donkey (drawn by Bill and embellished by TT & N), pick up that prize and then hit the skittles and the prize from there.

they had to return to home base after each game and put their prize in their bags, and now we realise that we should have just had them carry their bags around with them.  (but actualy if they had done that they would have picked up a prize at every game and um, given that we only had 3 no-shows and hadn't quite expected all the kids from nursery to turn up, um, well, we would have run out of prizes)

after all this, the food came out and they ate lots.  then the cake and they ate all that.  then we didn't have time for the planned game of musical chairs (the next child to be having a birthday will probably get a nice set of plasticine which was going to be the prize...)  so we went straight onto the pinata (sorry, don't know how to make a tilde on LJ and can't be bothered to figure it out now) and that pinata was the most ROBUST i have ever seen, every kid got a whack, and some more than one, and it just wouldn't break.  so we broke it  and then Bill sent the contents flying over all their heads and they ran about scooping up the sweets and leaving the boxes of raisins to rot.

pinatas are meant to be made of papier mache.  this one had cardboard in it.  WTF?  how is that supposed to explode in a shower of sweets then?

not long after all the children and their really quite amazinlgy tolerant parents ([personal profile] halle  and [profile] jarthur being amongst the *mostest* and *bestest* of those parents) left, many having helped to clear up.  we were left with little to do and would have been out there by 5.40, if it hadn't taken two runs in the car since all the rubbish woulnd't fit in on the way home.

and then to some presents, and party leftovers for tea.  yum.  i grilled the hummous and cheese pinwheels.  they were nice.  must try that again.

N has opened 3 presents.  one is the best ever backpack with an elephant on it that is going to replace his current nursery school bag.  it's the sort of thing i wish i had made.  just lovely.

he has a lot more than 3 presents left to open,  i think we'll do two a day after school until we're done.

phew.  what a day.
