We stopped in Gullane for a sticky bun this afternoon (the village
coffee shop, highly recommended, but you have to squeeze between
tables a bit if you're my size).

Walking back to the car we passed the Bethany charity shop and my eye
was caught by a Singer Sewing Library "Sewing for Children" which for
some strange reason I didn't own.. So I went in, and it was £2, Sold.
Then I twirled the twirly stand it was on and found "The Beatrix
Potter Knitting Book (ISBN 0723234574 if you're interested).

It's amazing. Sure there are lots of charts for Peter Rabbit and the
like, and they're well, cute-ish, but oh my goodness, what is that over
the breasts of the woman in the second picture? The pattern is
called foxglove. And no, don't ask me why I bought it, it was there,
ok?

Remember I went on a whole day's knitting machine training? Was
anyone wondering if I was ever going to put it to use?

Well, finally today I did something. Only a swatch, but something!

I finished TT's bathrobe (photo to follow) so I decided I could play.
I went to Boots for surgical spirit, which many people have said you
have to sign the poison book for, so I queued for a while and then
was told it was on the shelf. Must just be meths you have to sign
for...

Came home, cleaned up the machine a bit, but it really wasn't too
bad, just some old oil. I didn't touch the sponge bar, since I have
one on order, and I'm not taking it out until I have a new one ready
to put in. So, i conclude that the machine (i'm third owner) has
been pretty well looked after.

anyway, I set it up, knitted some stocking stitch, stuck in punch
card 4p and produced 48 rows of tuck stitch. and it worked really
well, no dropped stitches, nothing tucked that shouldn't have. and
that's without putting on the brushes, which i didn't realise i
needed until i read the next page of the manual.

anyway, either side can be right side i guess, and i'm happy that it
works, and it's easy!

i think it will be easier when i have the new sponge bar though,
because the carriage is pretty stiff at the moment.

Sewing FO, the bathrobe
Originally uploaded by thereyougothen.

Here's the finished bathrobe. I used the basic blocks in Kwik Sew
Sewing for Children, and added bits on and subtracted other bits here
and there. The fabric came from Croft Mill a couple of years ago, and
is printed fleece on the outside and white poly cotton terry on the
inside. TT asked if he could have it for years and years! I think he
likes it!

Little brother included for scale.
