Some of the yarn I bought in Jenners last week is a chunky wool, so that'll be a fast knit. in the spirit of using my convalescence to learn new stuff, I think a top down raglan in the round is in order. (yes, this is the same Alison who had never knit in the round before last week).

i got a new book last week - Designing knitwear by Deborah Newton. well, ok, it's great at some stuff, and where you can get inspiration and other stuff, but it doesn't help me with how to make a raglan sweater. I am a trifle disappointed by this. The fact that I can't find my copy of Sweater Design in Plain English is what is really pissing me off though. I just had it last week. It can't have gone far. And I know it's got a raglan sweater recipe in it.

blah.

i haven't loaded knitware on this pc yet. besides, i thought i'd have a go without it.

never mind, i have to swatch anyway. and i guess i have to swatch in the round... do I care that much?

Swatching in the round for a sweater is otherwise known as starting by knitting a sleeve, according to Yarn Harlot. For anything but top down sweaters, unfortunately.

Really, it depends if you know you knit balanced knit and purl rows. To find out, knit two garter stitch squares in any yarn, same no of stitches and rows, using the same yarn but using all knit rows for one and all purl rows for the other. If you end up with identical squares then you should be able to knit your swatch on straights. Usually.....
