a quarter of the way through

well, it wasn't so bad today. it still took two veins, but at least the first one refused to cooperate before the drug was started. different nurse today, so different conversation. but the nurse from last time had to be called to find my vein, so i got to say hello to her as well.
actually i had two nurses with me, because one was just starting as a breast care nurse so she was shadowing a chemo nurse for the day to see "that side of the story". she's an oncology nurse who is now going to specialise in breast cancer. i witnessed my first disagreement, the new nurse said that because i hadn't had my armpit lymph nodes removed it would be safe to use my right arm for the treatment. the chemo team leader disagreed in the strongest terms.
so into my left wrist it went, on the other side from last time.
i got my pile of tablets, 5 steroids, one other anti-sickness one. you need to wait at least 10 to 20 minutes but it took much longer in the end because the pharmacy was late delivering everyone's drugs. in the end we were there for 2 hours, when on a perfect day i should be able to be in and out in 50 minutes.
it was fine. as Bill said, I am now a quarter of the way through my chemo treatments.
now i have a headache that won't go away, even with drinking many litres of orange juice and water and taking co-codamols.
i told them about the heartburn so they have given me a one-a-day magic bullet to deal with that. the heartburn started this afternoon so i took the capsule, and it went away just like that.
if there's a side effect, they do their best to help you out.
shame there's nothing much they can do about the hair. i think about half my hair has fallen out, and it's going fast. there are a couple of small bald spots, and the rest has thinned out a lot. an awful lot. i am trying to cope with it, but not doing very well. there have been tears.
my near neighbour who went through all this 4 years ago came round the other day and we had a blether, which was good, and i met up with one of the mums from school who has a different cancer, but has had the same consultant and oncologist as me, and also had her surgery in the plastics ward at st johns. our boys are great friends at school, so we will see a fair bit more of each other, I think.
at the moment without going back and looking i can't remember if i have said anything about Barbara, my headache has shot my concentration to hell.
The boys are very happy with her, she has done both school runs on her own. we sat down and worked out a daily schedule/list of duties for her and she seems happy with it all. she's very nice and so far spends most of the evening in her room, probably on her very flash laptop surfing the interwebs.
I'm very tired and should have gone to bed an hour ago, but i ended up watching Spooks on the catch up TV thing instead. so now i am jangled as well.
thanks for all the phone calls today, it's good to talk, you know. i know, i know, it's hard to shut me up! and thanks for the texts and emails too. thanks. it's really good to have so much support.

Date: 2007-12-12 10:50 pm (UTC)Have been talking to MIL and suggested that perhaps I could make a meet up (City Knitty?, elsewhere?) on Sunday if we come across to Edinburgh and they can take the boy off for an hour or two with them. We're not 100% sure about Edinburgh, FIL is contemplating buying a car over that way while I am up, but will get back to you... It would be great to meet up.

Date: 2007-12-13 01:16 pm (UTC)it depends if the weekend in question is a saturday or sunday one, but i'm sure we could change it for that weekend. if not, we can meet up somewhere nice for a drink or a coffee and a sticky bun. knitting will then be optional.
