home sweet home

we went on tuesday to preston street primary school for TT's
orientation visit. so far there are only 16 kids in his
class. private school parents, eat your heart out! he's
really looking forward to starting - and the 16 kids thing has helped
me stop worrying about whether he's really too young. he wants to
go, and he won't be in a huge class. he'll be fine. the
class will get bigger over the summer, but it still isn't going to get
up to the 33 they have a sciennes. and they have 3 classes
there. nyah nyah. unlike some parents, preston street was
our first choice. because it's small and the people seem
nice. it's pretty good on the league table things - not as good
as sciennes maybe, but we're expecting to help him anyway. small
school is my first priority. well, except maybe if you're talking
about castlebrae community high school.
after the school, TT and I went for a sticky bun, then headed to the supermarklet, where the car decided to stop working. it now has a new very expensive clutch in it, but what the hell, they washed it as well, and TT did have the huge adventure of being towed by the AA. (and the AA man had the adventure of dealing with a woman bursting into tears over being told she was steering the wrong way while being towed)
TT and I got very wet walking to the nursery to collect N.
so on wednesday - I had to walk to work, and I'm still seriously chuffed that I did it in 40 minutes. and even quite enjoyed it - walking is good for thinking. except for the last half of blackford hill, when it isn't good for anything but gasping...
and then on friday:
the carpet's down (or up, when it's on the stairs). the under eaves cupboard is finished (except for a pelmet to disguise the door runner, but i'm not bothered). the shower is fixed. the room is painted.
the carpet fitters were great. a family business, it was grandad, dad and son. the banter was pretty funny from time to time. and it's so much nicer to give our hard-earned money to a family busniess than to a huge multiple.
and then yesterday:
we have moved back into our own room, and there are no toys in it! yet.
the sofabed is sold and out of the house. my knitting machine cabinet is (temporarily) in its place. must put the knitting machine in it!
now Bill is off helping Damian hang a door, after helping to put up coving yesterday.
and TT rode his bike really well today - and used the brakes to stop instead of falling off, and even looked where he was going and steered at the same time. soon we'll all be able to go out togehter on our bikes, with N in the seat on the back of Bill's bike - so Nico & I must get helmets. And I must get some stamina back!
amd we played at the beach, and i'm the one who got wet feet!
and the sun has come out.
back to work tomorrow. 18 more working days. and probably this week i'll find out about the redundancy possibilities.
Bill starts coming along to tehcnology development meetings tomorrow. lovely. my first meeting of the week and he's there too. i don't like mixing home and work to quite that degree. well, given how much he's going to be travelling over the next few months it looks like he'll be there for 3 before I finish up.
elizabeth last week asked what i do at the observatory. i said i'm a project assistant, but these days since I look after the technology development group, my job is more secretarial. "oh, you mean organisational" well, no, I don't. there's a lot more to being a secretary than organising. but secretarial is a bad word, isn't it? she quite happily talks about the departmental secretary at work, I guess she doesn't have friends who are secretaries. so I have to be organisational. okay.
