from [livejournal.com profile] tracied alternative energy:   well, we had a passive solar water heating system in Edinburgh, built by BIll using a bunch of stuff we got from Freecycle.  We had thoughbt about a wind turbine, and it's still something we might do when we're living there again.  While we relaise that we wouldn't get a lot of electricity from it, it would just be so cool to actually generate some of our own electricity.  Solar panel are another possibility, especially if the installation price starts to come down.
Here in Chile, we are amazed at how little people use the sun for energy.  If we owned this house, we would at the very kleast install a passive solar water heating system.  We have *3* hot water heaters.  Gah.  We'd also want solar panels for electricity.  At the moment, Bill is trying t work out a way to use the sun to heat the swimming pool...

knitting in the pub:  more something I used to do, every week, before leaving scotland.  although it had ended up being mor eknitting in the cafe over coffee and cake more often. and knitting in the bookstore.  knitting in the pub had become pretty rare.  peraps I can fix that here.

home comforts:  it's a book I bought when we lived in Penticton, but I don't know if it's actually canadian.  It's like a modern north american version of Mrs Beeton.  But also, I just like my home comforts, I much prefer to be a home than to be out, that's why I like having parties.  I get to see my friends, without leaving home.

dressmaking:
I made my first dress (it was in grey flowered wincyette, if I recall, not sure what I was thinking there!) to go to a school dance when we lived in England.  So I must have been around 12.  I'd already done my girl scout sewing merit badge by then.  I've made my own clothes, off and on, ever since.  I didn't do much in my teenage years, or while I was at Uni, but when I needed "office clothes" for my first office job, I made all my suits.  I made my dress and jacket for my wedding to Bill.  I've just cut out about 5 different things to make here, now.  All for me, too.

sushi: one of those things I couldn't/didn't eat while on chemo.  I don't rfemember if it was offically off limits, but I was paranoid anyway.  since we  have moved to CHile, we eat it quite often.  Bill and I go for sushi for lunch.  I buy it from the supermarket even.  It's obvioulsy very popular here, there are sushi takeaway and delivery places all over.  The only odd thing is that for some reason they ut cream cheese in most of it.  But they also use a lot of avocado. yum.

What did you study at Uni?

And did you teach yourself dressmaking (after your girl scout badge)?

Fascinating, as always :-)
